Brewery Business: Meet Linda from Kids & Company
For those that need it, having child care close to home is a huge convenience. We're thrilled to include Kids & Company as part of The Brewery District community. The New Westminster Centre operates under the leadership of Director Linda Shimizu. With nearly two decades of experience in child care, Linda oversees a variety of programs that serve more than 60 children. We met with Linda recently. Keep reading to find out what she had to say:
What made you want to become involved in childcare?
I’ve had a love for children since I was a child myself. I spent a lot of time volunteering while I was in high school. As soon as I graduated, I started working in various child care centres and gained my experience as I went to school for my ECE (Early Childhood Education). Seeing children grow and develop from infancy to school age is such a reward. And it just warms your heart every time you see a child smile, giggle and give you those special hugs and kisses. I can’t imagine myself working in any other field.
What different types of programs can people find at Kids & Company?
We have 5 programs: 3 infant and toddler programs and 2 3-5 group care programs. We offer an emergent curriculum for our children. We also have our Kids & Company Proprietary programs such as Alpha Mania, Mini Masters, Munchkinetics, Yoga and sign language within our Centre.
For families looking for childcare, where should they start and how early should they sign up?
Families are encouraged to come by our Centre during open house which is held every Thursday from 9-11 am. We also have a Saturday open house once a month (usually the first Saturday of each month, unless it is a long weekend it would be held the week after) from 10 am -12 pm. It allows families to view our programs, go over the registration process and ask any questions they may have. Families can also call (604.553.0593) or email me to set up a tour time, if our open house hours do not work for them. Every family’s situation is different, but I strongly encourage families to register sooner than later.
Healthy eating is part of the program at Kids & Company. What can you tell us about your Kidco Kitchen program?
Kids & Company provides a very nutritious and diverse menu. We provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. Everything is prepped on location by our amazing chef.
What do you like most about New Westminster?
I’ve grown up in Burnaby my whole life. And I can’t believe how much New Westminster is growing. The Brewery District itself has changed so much!
What is your favourite thing about being located at The Brewery District?
We are SkyTrain accessible. And I love the view we have outside our building. There’s so many shops around us, and it’s nice to walk around this neighborhood.
