Billion Dollar Investment in Health Care Planned for Sapperton
WITH MAJOR INVESTMENTS COMING, SAPPERTON IS THE NEIGHBOURHOOD TO WATCH
Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) is set for major redevelopment and growth. A major 3-phased expansion is planned, and at $1 billion, it may be the single largest government investment in health care in BC.*
Already one of the city's most important economic contributors, RCH's impact on both the Sapperton and New Westminster economies is set to grow even more.
3 MAJOR PHASES OF GROWTH
Here's an overview of what's coming:
Phase 1: The first phase is already underway. Site preparation has begun and excavation starts this month. Valued at $260 million, major highlights include a new Mental Health Wellness Centre, outpatient clinics and improved care for seniors. Phase 1 will also include a new parkade and an energy centre to provide the power and utilities infrastructure required for both the current and future hospital needs. Phase 1 is scheduled to be open in 2020.
Phase 2 and 3*: The second and third phases, subject to government approval, are planned to be complete around 2025. Highlights include a new acute care tower, additional acute care beds, a larger emergency department, a new operating suite and upgrades to existing spaces. Once complete, the expansion is expected to double the hospital's floorspace and increase the number of full time equivalent jobs at RCH by 50%.
A NEW VISION FOR NEW WESTMINSTER
What does this mean for the neighbourhood? The major expansion is an integral part of the new vision for the city. New Westminster's recently released Draft Official Community Plan outlines further plans to build on the hospital expansion by encouraging the creation of cluster of health care related businesses and services in the neighbourhood directly surrounding RCH. Along with the expansion, the city of New Westminster and the Province are planning on future improvements to road, bike and pedestrian access to meet the growing needs of the hospital.
